What this calculator does
Body mass index (BMI) compares weight with height. It is a quick screening measure for whether your weight sits in a healthy range, not a complete health assessment.
This calculator shows your BMI, the WHO category, the healthy weight range for your height and a target weight at BMI 22. It does not distinguish muscle mass from body fat.
BMI formula
BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height (m)² At 72 kg and 1.75 m, BMI is 23.5. Below 18.5 is underweight, 18.5–24.9 normal, 25–29.9 overweight and 30+ obesity.

Frequently asked questions
What is a normal BMI?
For adults, 18.5–24.9 is considered normal weight. Age, sex, muscle mass and health conditions can affect how useful the number is.
Why is BMI misleading for athletes?
Muscle is denser than fat. A person with high muscle mass can have a high BMI while carrying little body fat.
Does BMI apply to children?
No. Children and teenagers are assessed using age- and sex-specific percentile charts, not adult BMI thresholds.
